Doors

In a pre-1930s house you'll find one of two types of doors - battened or panelled.

A panelled door
A battened door

Batterned Doors
Batterned doors are planks of wood nailed together, then braced across the back with horizontal pieces of wood called 'ledges'. If you look at the example above you can see the row of nails that join the vertical planks to the horizontal planks behind the door.

This type of door has been used at least since the middle ages and remains a popular feature in rural properties up and down the country.

Panelled Doors
Panelled doors started appearing at the beginning of the eighteenth century.

Typically Georgian doors have six panels with pillars either side and Victorian doors have four panels.
