Westerham

The first settlement on river Darent is the bustling small town of Westerham . It lies about ten miles west of Sevenoaks.

Ham is an Old English word meaning a village or homestead, and so Westerham is literally a westerly homestead.

Westerham was a thriving market town in the 18th and 19th century.

The photographs below show the remains of an old Mill at Westerham.

Water Power
River power has been in use since the Roman times, when mills built beside rivers had large wooden watermills that turned a grindstone to grind grain or perform other tasks.

The mill at Westerham was one of many along the river Darent.
