Evidence of Erosion

Signs of erosion may often be seen in a river.

Can you spot the signs of erosion in the photograph below?

Cracks in the soil in the river bank

Tree leaning over showing signs that it will soon fall into the river.

Only the roots of the tree are keeping it in place. When the soil is eroded around the roots, the tree will slip into the Thames.

When you are by a river look for one or more of these signs of erosion:

  • Exposed tree roots.

  • Cracks in the soil in a river bank.

  • Clumps of grass in the river.

  • The top part of the river bank overhangs.

  • Brown or coloured water.

  • Collapsed river bank.
